My artworks focus on themes of memory, loss, grief, identity, cultural intersections, spiritual growth and self discovery, but above all my art celebrates my Malaysian Chinese heritage.
The use of gold leaf has become synonymous with my art. Gold leaf, a material imbued with spiritual significance across various cultures, serves as a constant thread in my work. Its luminous quality connects me to the transcendent, symbolizing eternity, enlightenment, and the divine.
The moon flask is a metaphor for my own journey through time and space. The moon flask is a vessel that has traveled along the silk route into Europe and the multicultural influences can be seen through the use of the cobalt blue colour, a colour discovered in Persia.
The Chinese moon flask, also known as a baoyueping (宝月瓶), is thought to have been inspired by the full moon, which is a symbol of longevity, harmony, and good fortune in Chinese culture. The round body of the moon flask represent the heavens, while the two arched handles represent the earth. The moon flask originated in the Middle East, but it became popular in China during the Ming dynasty.
In this series, the motifs of the moon flask grows out of the vase to merge with the background. This visual metaphor represents the union of internal and external worlds, thus a sense of belonging.
Through my artwork, I invite viewers to contemplate the complexities of identity, the enduring power of memory, and the transformative potential of spiritual exploration.
