Everyday Penang. The Art of Joy is my first book of illustrations curated and published by Miku Books. How this book came about was completely magical. In June 2023, I had just returned from London. It was not a good trip. I had badly injured my knee whilst on holiday, and was bedridden for about 1 month and was undergoing rehab. A good friend came to visit me when I was back home and we were catching up. One of the things we were talking about was my future art projects. I replied disheartenedly that I had nothing lined up. To cheer me up, we talked about dream projects. That’s when my eyes lit up as I told her about my dream of publishing a book of daily sketches that I have been doing for the past 10 years. We talked about it and how I was going to achieve this dream. Step one was to find a publisher. We chatted some more and then she left. The next morning, Roz from Clarity Publishing pings me on Facebook messenger. I thought that was the strangest thing. She asked for my email. It turns out she wanted to know how many sketches I had of Penang as she was looking to Publish an art book under Miku books. My heart was excited at this point. Have you ever heard people saying that your phone listens to your conversations? I felt exactly like that. How did she know I was talking about the dream of publishing a book just the night before?
