Wood? Probably not. And remember soap was scarce then… And hot water too. King Louis XIV supposedly never took a bath in his life. Yuk!

In the middle ages, peasants sometimes carved a circular hole in the long wooden table that was used for meals, and the soup was served directly into the hole. Which was then “cleaned” with bread. Nothing went to waste then.
