I started my sketch a day in April 2013 and I decided from the onset that I will not draw people. In the 6 years I have done 5 bearded characters for Movember.
Now with charcoal, I have changed my mind and I have decided to start drawing people and figures because it’s been an area I have conciously stayed clear from. It’s not that I don’t find people interesting to draw but I feel it’s a subject that is really difficult to get right and that scares me.
My intention here, as with all my other sketches is to capture a feeling rather than a realistically perfect representation of the subject which my phone can do better than me. 📱

It’s so funny, what I have drawn most with charcoal are people! Being able to get one’s hands in the medium allows one to smoosh and smear and create skin, hair, eyes and shadows (I always draw the shadows first, then the person emerges from them. Perhaps that says something about who I am.) … that seem to me connected to the feeling of one’s hands. So connected to the way we perceive that person. Enjoy your new medium! Good job. 😘
