An interesting tradition. Why oranges? They were the golden apples of Jason and the Argonauts.
Your drawing made me think of an old dessert, cam cuat (whatever the spelling is) kumquat? Gam gwat in cantonese, a very small tangerine, preserved in sugar and served as a dessert. But now in France it is almost impossible to find. A shame. 🙂
