Sketch of the day in my moleskine art journal is of a vintage mahjong tile hand made in Penang.
This tiles is considered a ‘flower’ and the chinese character means ‘fly’.
An artisan made this in Penang. Mahjong tile making is an old trade in Penang but it is almost disappeared.
Mahjong is played with four players with 144 mahjong tiles. It is a traditional chinese game.

My mother taught us children to play mah-jong. It was great fun. I’m not sure I remember how to play it anymore.
(Now come to think of it, where is her mah-jong box? Hmmm.)
And the names are so poetic. (Forgotten them too I’m afraid)
Well, my friend, have a lovely week. May the Force be with you.

O for sure it has become a lost art. Old mahjong tiles are beautiful! And a bit like Lego to a child. Well for me anyway. It’s not the same as holding flimsy cards.

I love to play Mahjong on my computer, and have dreamed of playing it with real tiles someday. I find these beautiful tiles fascinating. Imagine having a job that is to make mahjong tiles – certainly becoming a lost art.
