Sketch of the day in my moleskine art journal is of Alexandrian Laurel. Calophyllum inophyllum. Commonly know locally in Penang, Malaysia as Penaga laut. It is an evergreen tree that favours sandy coastal soil with white fragrant flowers that only last a day.
It is nature’s medicine chest. Every part of the plant can be used.
Traditional Medicinal uses:
Bark – treat diarrhoea, rheumatism and wounds
Leaves – soothe sore eyes, treat dysentry, cuts, skin rash and ulcers. Inhalation of leaves can treat migraine and vertigo
Flowers – heart tonic and essential oil from flower has anti bacterial and anti inflammatory properties
Seed oil – treat rheumatism, ulcers, boils and ringworm
Fruit oil – made into soaps and lighting fuel
Timber – hardwood to make furniture and boats

Beautiful. And – I love the name of the flower – similar to one of my daughter’s names – Alexandria. 😉
