Sketch of the day in my moleskine art journal is a drawing of the iconic Penang ferry. This ferry is named Pulau Undan and it has been in service since 1975. I have great memories of using the ferry service as a child. It would be a highlight to go on it. The ferry was the only way out of Penang island. Today we have 2 bridges that connect the island to the mainland. The ferry is still in service because it takes passengers as well as vehicles across to the mainland which is called Butterworth (seberang prai). The crossing is short. It takes about 10 mins. This ferry has vehicles on the lower deck and passengers in the upper deck.

I didn’t sketch this one on the ferry! I world have vomited. My sketches don’t take long though. Between 10 to 60 mins depending how much details I put into it and how much time I have that day π

I don’t think anything (except maybe Christmas) carries quite so exciting memories from childhood as a ferry boat ride. There’s so much hustle and bustle and such a variety of activity to watch. It’s almost mesmerizing to a child. And then there’s the slapping of the water against the bow and its churning wake behind, and the screeching birds overhead until that final, gentle (hopefully) thud that tells you the ride has ended and the bustle begins all over again. Your sketch brings back great memories for me, no matter that it’s a ferry half-way round the world!
