Continuing my series of spices from the spice trade..Today’s sketch of the day in my moleskine art journal is of Black pepper. The humble spice and seasoning.
One of the (many) reasons for European worldwide exploration in the 15th-18th century was spice. French food was tasteless. Very little salt (expensive and taxed) a few herbs (parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme?) a bit of mustard in the south. Tasteless. In french, pepper is as you may recall called “poivre” after the name of a Mr Poivre who brought back the first seeds from an overseas trip. 🙂
(I know: “nerding” again!)
