Sketch of the day in my moleskine art journal is the Clove. The spice that was worth more than gold.
Cloves originated from Moluccas, the spice islands in Indonesia. In the 16th century, the Dutch, Portugese and the Spanish fought over control of the islands to secure a monopoly over the highly lucrative clove and nutmeg trade. The British arrived in the early 18th century focused more on Malaya.
Cloves are the aromatic flower buds that are dried and used as a spice to flavour meats, sauces and drinks. The clove can be smoked as well and is popular in Indonesia. It is called Kretek,
Cloves have medicinal properties and used in ayuverdic and Chinese medicine to aid digestion.
