Sketch of the day in my moleskine art journal is a bottle of Yeni Raki, anise flavoured alcoholic drink, made in Turkey by distilling grapes obtained during wine fermentation.
How to drink Yeni Raki?
It is consumed straight in a small glass or with chilled water. It is a must with meze, a selection of cold or hot appetizers like tapas, and is considered Turkey’s national drink. Yeni Raki is one of the most popular brands. You will see people drinking it at dinner in restaurants in Istanbul and around Turkey. Drink in a group, with friends, never alone 🙂

It is, of course, very popular over here in Crete. We learned the other day that the police’s biggest problem is the behaviour Raki, or Tsikoudia, leads to. Turns out many fathers force their sons to drink it when they’re young so that they will grow up to ‘be men’. As a result, they’re addicted to it. Frightening.
