Today’s sketch of the day in my moleskine art journal is a red Tulip with pointed petals. The Tulip is Turkey’s national flower and is indigenous to the country. The flower symbolises perfection and beauty. Considered the king of bulbs, the Ottoman’s were so in love with this flower that it was incorporated into all designs during the tulip period. Iznik designs use a lot of tulips in their decoration.
The tulip was exported to other European countries where they have been grown to have round petals

Tulips are so popular in the west that we sometimes forget that Turkey gave the world the tulip. Thanks for your painting and the information.

I’d never heard of the Ottoman’s tulip fascination, either. I knew about the Dutch tulip craze but not he Ottoman’s.
