Sketch of the day in my moleskine art journal is a water pipe called Shisha or Nargile in Turkey. Smoking Nargile is Turkish past time.
Flavoured tobacco, for example apple which is a classic flavour, is wrapped in a foil and placed at the top bowl on top of hot coal. The smoke is drawn down to the base where cold water cools and filters it before it is inhaled.
Smoking Nargile is a social past time where friends get together in a cafe to relax. Each person is given their own plastic mouthpiece for hygiene purposes. When one person is done with smoking the Nargile, the hosepipe is placed on the table and the next person will pick it up.

Is that like Hookah? I’ve never understood the appeal. And I used to be a smoker.
There’s a hookah place at the corner of our street and the smell of vanilla would knock you down!

In the US they are more generically referred to as hookahs. My son has been “smoking” the hookah since he was a freshman in college. My biggest complaint is the mess he makes with it. — YUR
