The sketch of the day in my moleskine art journal is one of the local favourite past time. Chewing tobacco. The local old ladies of the Salako Kampung carry a chewing kit consisting of tobacco, kapor sirih (betel leaf powder), sirih (betel leaf) and buah pala (nutmeg) They mix the ingredients together and chew. The leaf usually stains their teeth a reddish colour.

nah, I didnt try it cos it makes your teeth red. I think it relaxes them. The equivalent of a cigarette without the smoke.

So, what’s the effect? Does it relax them, or give them energy, or get them a little loopy? I’m not familiar with betel leaf and its powder, but I’m sure there’s a specific reason for this combo. Did you try it? — YUR
