I have been off the grid for more than a week because I was living with the Salako tribe in Kampung Jantan. This is a small village about 1 1/2 hours from Kuching, Sarawak. The Salako tribe is an indigenous tribe of not more than 20,000. They live close to the Indonesian border in the Lundu district. They are traditionally subsistence farmers. The Salako people have a strong sense of community and are very welcoming and hospitable.
The village is pretty modern. They have electricity, satellite TV and water supply from the gravity feed. Phone coverage is pretty dodgy though and there is no internet.
We stayed with the former village chief. He spoke pretty good English. There are a few people here who speak fluent English and the rest can understand basic English. There is a home stay for tourists to get a feel of ‘Kampung’ life. I would highly recommend this.
